Books & Cards

The following books are ones that I recommend. The first thriteen are relevant to Astrology, though that is only one part of the path. The books on Astrology will give you a better idea of what can be learned through the study of charts. The books included will also give you all you might need to interpret your own charts, as well as those of people in your life.

The other books, cards and oracle are the textbooks of my path. I hope that you find these helpful on your path.

An Astrological Mandala; The Cycle of Transformations and Its 360 Symbolic Phases
An Astrological Mandala; The Cycle of Transformations and Its 360 Symbolic Phases, by Dane Rudhyar

Dane Rudhyar is considered to be one of the founders of modern astrology. A renaissance man, his work included philosophy, music, art, and literature. Though many of his books are worth reading, this one is, in my opinion, invaluable. By reading the symbol for each planet, the ascendant, descendant, MC and IC, one paints of picture of the life as mapped out by the Astrological chart. I have found this to be an invaluable tool for understanding self and others.

Astrology: A Cosmic Science
Astrology: A Cosmic Science, Isabel Hickey

This is the first book that I would hope everyone reads as the primer of Astrology. Ms. Hickey is considered the Grand Dame of Astrology and rightly so. Her understanding of the opportunities for growth, healing and transformation started many of us on our path. This book covers so much, including how to figure out a chart. Though thanks to computers this is no longer necessary, the rest of the book tells us exactly what all of the components of a chart mean. It's very easy to read and must have for all interested in "knowing thyself."

Spiritual Astrology: Your Personal Path to Self-fulfillment
Spiritual Astrology: Your Personal Path to Self-fulfillment, by Jan Spiller and Karen McCoy

No other book that I know of is as thorough in the exploration of Eclipses and their effect on the natal chart. This book allows the reader to understand the lessons of this lifetime as indicated by the eclipse pattern one is born into. The book reveals the lessons we come to learn, and lessons we come to teach. It is truly a book that is a must read for any serious seeker of truth through Astrology.

Karmic Astrology: Retrogrades and Reincarnation, Vol. 2
Karmic Astrology: Retrogrades and Reincarnation, Vol. 2, by Martin Schulman

This was the only book I could find by Martin Schulman still in print. If you can find any others, grab them! Schulman's work is profound and includes detailed analysis of many key points within charts. His work on sexuality is brilliant. Since the other work will only be found in out of print collections, I am not listing it here. Starting with this book will open new doors of understanding, and thereby healing.

Astrological Insights into Personality, by Betty Lundsted
Barnes & Noble didn't have a picture of this book. I would have scanned mine to put a picture in, but I've used it so much the cover is shot. This is the one of the most important references I have when trying to understand the basic personality. Brutally honest, yet filled with compassion and solutions, it is one of my favorites.

Dynamics of Aspect Analysis; New Perceptions in Astrology
Dynamics of Aspect Analysis; New Perceptions in Astrology, by Bill Tierney

Charts are made up of planets and houses. The relationship or the space between those points to each other is as important as the signs. Maybe more so. This book describes the effect of the various aspects and offers proactive solutions for working through difficult areas. Once we know about the problems we face, we have the opportunity to overcome them. This is the book that helps us do that.

Asteroid Goddesses: The Mythology, Psychology, and Astrology
Asteroid Goddesses: The Mythology, Psychology, and Astrology, by Demetra George

The Asteroids are the agents of personal transformation. Within this pioneering work, Demetra George defines the role they play and the significance of the Asteroids in signs, houses and relationship to other planets. They are the bridge between ourselves and others. One of the nice things about this work is that it finally reclaims the feminine inherent in humankind. Work regarding the Asteroids is relatively new, and therefore definately part of healing surge covering the Earth at this time.

Chiron: Transforming Bridge Between the Inner and Outer Planets(Llewellyn's Modern Astrology Library Series)
Chiron: Transforming Bridge Between the Inner and Outer Planets(Llewellyn's Modern Astrology Library Series), by Barbara Hand Chow

Chiron is said to be a bridge of understanding, allowing us to comprehend the workings of the planets beyond Saturn. Chiron was discovered orbiting between Saturn and Uranus in the late 70's. Many Astrologers believe that with the discovery of a new planet mankind is ready to utilize the transformative energy of the planet. The theme of the Wounded Healer in part defines the meaning of Chiron in our charts. The definitive text on Chiron is Barbara Hand Chow's book. Through her work we can understand how we become healed, and heal others.

Progressed Horoscope (1923)
Progressed Horoscope (1923), by Alan Leo

This book, written in 1923, is still the book consulted for the interpretation of Progressed Charts. Though it is very fatalistic, and speaks little to the ability to transform our experiences, it is very valuable. In my opinion it's good to know how bad it could get. Once one has the various aspects down, one can easily assess a current or upcoming period. It might be a good idea to go backwards. For example if progressed sun hit natal moon in 2000, and the book says that would bring whatever, how close was that? I believe that transits and solar returns are just as important as progressions, though progressions hold some validity in the overall prophetic picture. In any case, this book is one to have on the shelf.

Planets in Transit: Life Cycles for Living
Planets in Transit: Life Cycles for Living, by Robert Hand

Robert Hand's work is extremely thorough and well executed. This is the book that, as he says, defines the life cycles. And through their definitions we are able to understand how to make the most of our lives. All transits, good or bad, have the ability to create chaos or peace. A positive transit that is not taken advantage of is as life denying period as wallowing in self pity or guilt when a more negative is upon us. Robert Hand's book is the most complete book available regarding transits, and therefore is the one to have.

Planets in Solar Returns: Yearly Cycles of Transformation and Growth
Planets in Solar Returns: Yearly Cycles of Transformation and Growth by Mary Shea

So what's the year going to be about? What are the conflicts, the opportunities, the events? This is one of the most important books giving those answers. With a planet by planet, house by house definition, this well written book tells us what we need to know about a year. With this book you can answer many of the questions you pay me to answer. And with this book, you can do so every year!

Planets in Composite: Analyzing Human Relationships
Planets in Composite: Analyzing Human Relationships, by Robert Hand

Composite charts are charts of relationships. I have observed that the rising sign of a composite chart tells us what the relationship will be about. Transits to points in a composite chart can fortell problems, ease and opportunities for the relationship. Synastry charts using the individuals charts with the composite chart can fortell the effect of the relationship on the individual. The classic way of utilizing composites is no less important. These charts are the natal chart, so to speak, of the relationship, or the blueprint of the relationship. In that most people are calling me about relationships, it seems this is the work I would be asked to do. Unfortunately we rarely have the birth times of both parties. What a shame. In any case, Robert Hand's work on composites is as in depth as his work on transits. This is another must have and definitive book.

Synastry: Understanding Human Relations through Astrology
Synastry: Understanding Human Relations through Astrology, by Ronald Davison

When I am attempting to understand a relationship this is one of three books I turn to. The other two being the former and the next. This book is essential in understanding the relationship between two people. How they effect one another and what the possibilities are. There is a general misconception about astrology and relationships held by the masses. That misconception being that the sun signs are important. They do hold some importance, but as studying this book reveals, there are many other important indicators. I highly recommend this book.

Planets in Synastry: Astrological Patterns of Relationships
Planets in Synastry: Astrological Patterns of Relationships, by E.W. Neville

This is the final relationship book available that I recommend. It covers both synastry and composite issues and adds to the overall picture defined in the previous two books. The ability of any relationship to become and remain loving lays in the understanding of the relationship by the parties involved. This book completes the picture and allows that understanding to unfold.

Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul
Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul, Jane Roberts, Seth and Robert F. Butts

The Seth books are probably the first books about the nature of Human reality. They are the books that opened the masses to what is now called New Age practices. Seth Speaks is the first and an important work. If you question why you are on the planet, why things happen to you, and are looking for greater purpose, (as well as a few explanations!), this is the book that begins to answer those questions.

The Oversoul Seven: The Trilogy
The Oversoul Seven: The Trilogy, by Jane Roberts and Seth

This is a fictionalized version of the Seth works. I have only read the first in the series, but it is no longer available separately. The first book is easy reading and very informative when one is seeking to understand the nature of Guides, reincarnation and human purpose. Life is school. This book describes the journey of the student and the teacher as well as the true nature of the classroom.

Dao de Jing: The Book of the Way
Dao de Jing: The Book of the Way by Lao Tzu

I almost forgot this one. That would have been sad. This is a book of inspiration and wisdom. It is an ancient text and one that adds grace to the mind and the library. Cherish it.

Earth Prayers/Earth Songs
Earth Prayers/Earth Songs -Elizabeth J. Roberts (Editor), Elias L. Amidon (Editor)

Ok. We live on planet Earth. We are alive because of her gifts. The plants that are her children create the air that we breathe. The dirt that she is covered with nurtures the plants that give us food. The waters that cover most of her keep us cool and generate life. So can we thank her occasionally? Can we spend a moment every so often, maybe even once a day, thanking her? Can we show her just a little gratitude? Guidance says that the cause of all suffering is a lack of gratitude. So, here is a great tool to get us started. A truly delightful book.

Celebrate the Earth: A Year of Holidays in the Pagan Tradition: A Year of Holidays in the Pagan Tradition
Celebrate the Earth: A Year of Holidays in the Pagan Tradition: A Year of Holidays in the Pagan Tradition by Laurie Cabot

So while we're paying a bit of attention to Planet Earth, let's go the extra mile and join her Celebrations. One does not have to be a Pagan to celebrate a Solstice or an Equinox. No one to party with you say? Ah, there are always birds in the park. I know there are a few Christian doctrines that would disagree with such a lax attitude; accepting Pagan practices! But we only live a few million times, so we have a responsibility to have some fun.

The Woman with the Alabaster Jar: Mary Magdalen and the Holy Grail
The Woman with the Alabaster Jar: Mary Magdalen and the Holy Grail, by Margeret Starbird

Before the DaVinci Code there was this book. This is not a novel, it is a nonfictional account of the life of Mary Magdalen and how her presence effected the Christian church, despite it's attempts to ignore her. I have always felt a great affinity for this Mary, and after reading this book I know why. Rather than the "reformed prostitute," a role I was perfectly ok with, it turns out that she was actually much more. If you love Christ, I certainly do, the knowledge you will gain from this work will empower you to love yourself as well. It will also give you a greater understanding of how we have manipulated the true story of Christianity so that it will support a dieing patriarchal system.

A Course in Miracles: Text, Workbook for Students, Manual for Teachers
A Course in Miracles: Text, Workbook for Students, Manual for Teachers, Foundation For Inner Peace (Editor)

How does one evolve past the mundane experience of the masses? How does one live ones life fully and with an openness to the Divine with every breath? Here is the text book. This is the accepted work for full transformation of ones life. It takes a daily practice for one year. None of the given daily exercises take much time. Each of the daily exercises is a step towards Peace, Ecstatic Aliveness and the daily creation of Miracles.

Truth or Dare: Encounters with Power, Authority, and Mystery
Truth or Dare: Encounters with Power, Authority, and Mystery by Starhawk

When I lived in San Francisco I was given the opportunity to attend a yearly celebration facilitated by Starhawk and others. I never stayed for the whole thing because they got to a point where they started calling in Ancestors and I have little interest in hanging out with dead people. Ok, so it would have been hanging out with Spirit. Even so, doing so is not my cup of tea. Despite the difference in our paths, I greatly admire Starhawk and her work. Unlike most "Spiritual" teachers, Starhawk walks the walk she talks. Her proactive agenda is exactly what the world is calling for. This book is one of many she has written. It so clearly explains the basis of much of her philosophy and the consciousness we will have to arrive at if we are to heal this planet. This book actually inspired my song The Goddess. Though I do not agree with her on all counts, I find much value in her work.

Heal Your Body: The Mental Causes for Physical Illness and the
Metaphysical Way to Overcome Them by Louise Hay

When I was thirty three I was in a motorcycle accident. The only injury I incurred was a broken leg. I was forced to take it easy and devote my time to healing and meditation for six months. This was a great example of what can happen during the year in life we call the "Christ Year." The year we die and are reborn. My rebirth was facilitated by this book. From simple headaches to serious life threatening illness, this book covers all. It shows us the way to healing.

Be Here Now
Be Here Now by Ram Das

This is the book that opened the door to spiritual practices other than Christianity to a generation. It is also a fun and informative read. Don't expect a classic text book or non-fiction work. The whimsical style of the writing and layout give the reader a playful way to approach non western ways of thinking, ways that are liberating to say the least.

Compendium of Herbal Magick
Compendium of Herbal Magick by Paul Beyerl

Paul Beyerl is a master herbalist. His other book, The Master Book of Herbalism is one I've been using for years as an ultimate reference work for herb works. I actually recommend both of the books. If you have an interest in Magik, this book is essential and goes further than any other books available.

Journey of the Heart: The Path of Conscious Love
Journey of the Heart: The Path of Conscious Love by John Wellwood

Much of the work I do is based upon the idea that relationships are in themselves a spiritual path. It is through our relationships with others that we grow and open to Divine Love. John Wellwood's work supports that belief and is an essential part of studies that lead to oneness. This is a book to read and pass on, especially to those we love. It shows us how relationships can be an integral part of our spiritual path.

Loving Relationships II
Loving Relationships II by Sondra Ray

Sondra Ray co-wrote a book, Birth and Relationships, that is no longer in print. I beleive that her work regarding the correlation of our birth stories and our relationships in adulthood is very important. Perhaps you can find a copy of that book somewhere online. I am so impressed with her work, I wanted to make sure that everyone has awareness of it. She truly is one of today's most important healers.

The Road Less Traveled, 25th Anniversary Edition
The Road Less Traveled, 25th Anniversary Edition by M. Scott Peck

If you haven't read this stop everything and do so. This is one of the most important works of our time. Lonf before Dr. Phil and Oprah, Scott Peck took a strong look at living a life of growth and common sense. His work is timeless and inspiring. If you are wondering why your life seems different from that being lived by the masses, perhaps you will find that you are living on the road less traveled.

People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing Human Evil
People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing Human Evil by Scott M. Peck

Sometimes I think that the people my clients are calling me about are like those Scott Peck writes about in this book. Though there are some passages that are a bit Christian, the basic premise of this book brings into focus the issues we face when we deal with those on the planet who are living lives that deny love, light and therefore life itself. This book helps us understand why some people are better left to go of on a seperate path.

Motherpeace Tarot Deck and Book Set
Motherpeace Tarot Deck and Book Set

If any Tarot deck is empowering, this is it. The cards are round, rather than rectangular. The art work is a little questionable, but the spirit of the cards is wonderful. I truly enjoy working with these cards.

you can save yourself some money and order this set for yourself.

Lover's Tarot: For Affairs of the Heart
Lover's Tarot: For Affairs of the Heart

These cards give a unique impression of a relationship. Because they only include the Major Arcana, which includes only twenty two cards, they are easier to master than a normal deck with include seventy eight. Additionally they go in slightly different direction, addressing issues pertinent to relationships only. They can shed some light on what is and what is to be.
